BJP asks for President's intervention

PTI (New Delhi)
10 August 2007

The Bharatiya Janata Party today sought President Pratibha Patil's intervention over Goa Speaker's decision to restrain three MLAs from voting on the trust motion of the Congress-led alliance government last month.

Addressing a dharna staged by the BJP as well as members of the Goa Democratic Alliance at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, senior BJP leader L K Advani said that being a constitutional head, the president has an obligation to protect the democracy.

Why should we look towards judiciary every time there is violation of constitutional rights, asked Advani, while terming the Speaker's action to disqualify as "unconstitutional".

He further argued that Patil, being a constitutional head, has an obligation to ensure that dignity of Constitution is maintained at all costs. The Speaker did not even follow the basic procedure of giving a chance to the MLAs to explain their position before disqualifying them, he added.

Referring to the petition challenging the Speaker's decision to restrain three MLAs from voting, Advani said that though all eyes are set on the Supreme Court, the protectors of Constitution such as Prime Minister and the ruling party should also ensure that the faith in democracy is not shaken.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh said that they would continue their protest until democracy is restored in Goa and the BJP-led GDA comes to power.

His statement came soon after Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi addressed the rally saying that Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray has asked him to support the cause.

"We are against the Congress policy in Goa," he said.

Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal (U) said that the issue will also be raised in the Parliament.

"We will not allow anybody to butcher democracy and fight tooth and nail for its protection," he said.
