looks Delhi-wards to market its Handicraft

Goa consideres Delhi as potential centre to market its handicraft
items.
With the thrust on handicraft promotion in the state, the
Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government is now looking
forward to metropolitan cities as the perspective buyers.
Amongst all Delhi tops the list.
``May be Delhi Haat or in the structure planned at Chanakyapuri,
we are desperately on look out for a stall to market the handicraft
products,'' Goa Handicraft and rural small scale industries
commission (GHRSSIC) president Damodar Naik opined.
He said the talks are on with the union textile ministry
for a suitable place to have a stall. ``The Goa tourism department's
stall at Delhi Haat may also be converted into a handicraft
stall,'' Mr Naik stated.
After years of neglect, the handicraft is getting the attention
in BJP's rule. The number of artisans recognised with the
state government has risen to 150-odd from less than 50, two
years back. ``We have undertaken the process of adding more
names,'' stated Mr Naik.
With the handicrafts being hot-favourite amongst the tourists
and middleman making merry sidelining the artisans, the state
government has decided to play a major role. The corporation
is in the process of putting up the item on-line. ``We would
woo customers on internet. They would be able to buy the products
on-line,'' he said.
In yet another attempt to expose handicrafts to the tourists,
since last year, the GHRSSIC is holding `Aparant Maand' festival
in the state. Labelled as Goa's Biggest Handicract Art and
Cultural Exposition, the event would be held in North Goa
between January 23 to 26. The tour operators are asked to
stop their buses at the exposition.
