Goa to deport overstaying foreigners

Sandesh Prabhudesai
10 July 2007

Goa has decided to come down heavily on the overstaying foreigners.

Ten such foreigners have already been deported by the state government.

Briefing the media in this regard after a high level meeting of the home ministry and senior police officials, home minister Ravi Naik said he will also not spare any foreigner violating the law of the land.

Besides overstaying, said Ravi, the state authorities will also clamp down upon the foreigners staying in Goa without valid documents.

He has instructed all the police stations to check documents of all the foreigners while also making it mandatory to the Goans, who rent out their rooms to the foreigners, to furnish all the details about their clients.

Fearing that terrorists could hide in the state under the garb of tourists, the home minister however clarified that the drive is not aimed at foreign tourists but to keep a strict vigil on the criminals.

He has also decided to strengthen the anti-narcotic cell of the police department to stop drugs trade as well as activities like rave parties etc.

The meeting was attended by chief secretary J P Singh, DGP Brijender Singh Brar, IGP N S Randhwa, DIG Ujwal Mishra and other senior police officials.
