Question paper scandal rocks the state

Sandesh Prabhudesai
11 April 2003

One teacher was arrested and another one was detained in a SSC examination question paper scandal that rocked the state.

Interestingly, two question papers of Maths and Geography that were actually leaked last year became the cause of the scandal this year.

Making it an issue, the opposition Congress raised a pandemonium in the House here while the ruling BJP government assured to make a detailed statement on Monday in this regard.

"It is not a large scale paper leakage but an intelligent job of a student, who leaked the papers in a most unprofessional manner", stated chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

The crime branch of Goa police has already swung into action, identifying students who bought the question papers at Rs 1500 each while also interrogating the teachers responsible for the leakage.

The police have already arrested Ravindra Patil, a teacher belonging to the Mata Secondary School of Vasco, after completing probe into the Maths paper. The second teacher is suspected to have been involved in leaking out the Geography paper.

The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination has also set up a sub-committee to probe into the issue by Monday. Parrikar plans to make a detailed statement in the House, based on findings of the police as well as the sub-committee.

According to the police, two teachers of Maths and Geography had actually leaked the full set of five question papers last years. While three of these papers were considered for last year's examination, another one was taken up at the October examination, leaving the last one for this year's examination.

"The student who obtained the last remaining question paper was intelligent enough to misuse the faulty paper-setting system that is being followed for the SSC examination", feels Parrikar.

Though he has ruled out the possibility of cancelling examinations of these two subjects, the Board does not rule out the possibility of re-examination. Since the police suspect involvement of not more than 25 students, Parrikar agrees with the opposition parties that the whole student community need not be punished by going for re-examination.
