Former
student leaders and activists of Goa have unanimously decided
to once more come together to revive the student movement
in the state.
In
a meeting held at Azad Bhavan on Sunday, 8th July, convened
as a follow-up to the condolence meeting for the late student
leader Cyril Pacheco held last month, former student leaders
resolved unanimously to come out of hibernation and actively
extend support to struggles on social issues. They also appealed
to the student community to revive the militant student movement
in the state.
Recalling
the late '70s and '80s, when Goa's militant student movement
was a potent force against injustice and authoritarianism,
they declared their full support for any move for its revival.
The next meeting of the group will be held at Ponda on Sunday,
22nd July.
Among
those who spoke at the meeting were Adv. Satish Sonak, Prakash
Naik, Mohandas Lolayekar, Dr Mukul Mahatme, Mathany Saldhana,
Keshav Prabhu, Servulo Barros, Christopher Fonseca, Dr Minaxi
Martins, Avinash Bhosle, Bernabe Sapeco, Prashanti Talpankar,
Ashwin Tombat, Adv Radharao Gracias, Dilip Borkar, Adv Nitin
Bodke, Prashant Naik, Jyoti Dhond, Adv Cleofato Almeida Coutinho,
Manoj Joshi, Meera Medhekar, Ratna Divkar, Adriano Pinto,
Socorro Fernandes, Albert D'Sa, Somu Rao, Adv Samir Bandodkar,
Avinash Raikar, Franco Fernandes, Umesh Mahambre and Sandesh
Prabhudesai.
Various
suggestions were made at the meeting about guiding the students
about potential of the student movement and make them aware
about the glorious history of student movement in Goa. The
meeting felt that only independent student movement, without
any political affiliation, can provide strong opposition to
the injustice going on in the Goan society in general and
educational field in particular.
The
meeting was largely attended by former student leaders and
activists of '70s and '80s.
