Alexio ProTem speaker
Digambar-Ravi leavefor Delhi

Sandesh Prabhudesai
11 June 2007

Alexio Sequeira, Loutolim MLA, was sworn in as Pro Tem speaker today morning at Raj Bhavan,

The ceremony was attended by chief minister Digambar Kamat as well as few Congress legislators.

The MLAs-elect would be sworn in this week, by convening a special Assembly session.

Meanwhile, Kamat and former chief minister Pratapsing Rane will leave for Delhi today afternoon to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Minister Ravi Naik, who was tipped to be the chief minister, has already landed in Delhi yesterday.

"I will seek explanation from the high command for the injustice meted out to me in spite of offering the post before elections", he told a group of media persons.

Kamat, in the meanwhile, is immensely under pressure from his colleagues for the cabinet posts. While Goan cabinet cannot exceed 12 ministers, the Congress itself consists of 10 former ministers, besides Kamat and Ravi.

The Congress-led alliance needs to induct two NCP, one MGP and at least one independent in the cabinet, leaving only eight seats, out of which two are already occupied by Kamat and Ravi.

This leaves only six seats for the eight aspirants.

The ruling party is expected to retain the posts of speaker and deputy speaker within the Congress to accommodated the ministerial aspirants.

While seeking directions from the high command on inducting ministers, Kamat is also expected to seek approval for the portfolios from Delhi in order to pacify his own partymen, who have already started lobbying for lucrative portfolios.
