United Goans Democratic
Party's sole MLA Babush Monseratte today made a volte face by expressing unconditional
support to Digambar Kamat government led by the Congress.
In a press note
released in this regard, he stated that he is withdrawing support to the Goa Democratic
Alliance in the better interest of the state.
Monseratte also met governor
S C Jamir today morning, along with Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho, to communicate
his decision.
Monseratte had taken initiative in trying to topple Kamat
government on 25 July, along with other opposition legislators - 14 BJP, 2 Save
Goa and one independent.
It is learnt that two SGF MLAs - Churchill Alemao
and Alex Reginald Lawrenco - will also follow Monseratte, supporting the Kamat
government.
The press note released by Monseratte stated as follows:
In
view of the turbulent political situation in the state of Goa after having witnessed
an Assembly election just two months ago, I am constrained to believe that political
instability and resultant turmoil is unending and is unpredictable as far as the
interests of the common man are concerned. In the better interests of the state
and my constituency of Taleigao, I hereby withdraw my support to the GDA and pledge
my unconditional support to the present government headed by Digambar Kamat.
In
the just concluded Presidential and Vice Presidential elections, I have witnessed
that the secular forces of the country have united to strengthen the hands of
the chairperson of UPA and Honourable Congress president Sonia Gandhi. As such,
it would be right and proper that in keeping with the national trend, we in Goa
should also unite to strengthen secular, democratic forces in the best interests
of the state.
Meanwhile, speaker Pratapsing Rane today postponed the hearing
on the petitions filed against Dahvalikar brothers and Victoria Fernandes.
The
disqualfication petition filed against Sudin and Dipak Dhavalikar would be heard
on 16 Auguest whereas the one agaisnt Victoria on 27 August.
All three
of them were restrained from voting on the trust vote on 30 July.
