Churchill to be sworn in at 7 pm

Sandesh Prabhudesai
14 August 2007

Churchill Alemao, the Save Goa Front leader, will be inducted in the Digambar Kamat cabinet today at 7 pm.

Both the SGF members have followed suit of UGDP MLA Babush Monseratte by withdrawing support to the Manohar Parrikar-led Goa Democratic Alliance within 19 days.

In return to the renewed support, Alemao would be rewarded with the PWD portfolio, which was handled by MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar earlier.

With this, the Kamat government that was on a slippery grounds, would be now strong enough with the support of 22 members in the House of 39, if Victoria Fernandes in not counted.

Though Dhavalikar brothers are still the MLAs, they are being restrained from voting, reducing the strength of the House further to 37, leaving only 15 members in the opposition.

It includes 14 BJP members and independent MLA Anil Salgaoncar.

The ruling Congress-led alliance includes 15 Congress, 3 NCP, 2 SGF, one UGDP and one independent - health minister Vishwajeet Rane.

GDA leader Manohar Parrikar, in the meanwhile, has given up hopes of forming an alternative government, stating that the BJP is prepared to sit in the opposition.

Sources also revealed that Victoria may return to the Congress since her resignation is still not accepted by the speaker. However, the news could not be confirmed since she is still in Delhi.
