CM to woo IITians in USA

Sandesh Prabhudesai
14 January 2003

Manohar Parrikar, the IIT engineer-turned chief minister of Goa, is now trying to woo his classmates and collegemates in the USA, besides other NRIs, to invest in Goa.

Parrikar is leaving for America, to attend the IITians' meet in California, scheduled on 17 and 18 January, on the occasion of completion of 50 years of IIT education in India, that had started in Khadakpur.

"I have many friends from the IIT there in the States, who are placed in a high position in different fields", says Parrikar. Besides participating in one of the panel discussions on value creation in education, he also plans to approach them with investment proposals.

Though he did not specify what kind of investment proposals he would put forward before his friends and collegemates, it is obvious that InfoTech is one of the prime subject on his agenda.

The Goa chief minister also plans to meet the NRIs, especially the Goan NRIs settled in the USA, with a similar proposal. He has already fixed two such meetings with them in New York and Montreal.

Yet another agenda on his nine-day tour is meeting directors of the international organisation that deals with safety parameters of constructing airport, sine Goa is going for an international airport at Mopa, on the northern border.

"If they agree to conduct a feasibility report for us, there are more chances of getting good investors for the air port project", states Parrikar. Goa is planning to have the airport on BOOT basis.

This is the first time Parrikar is going abroad since coming to power. Two chief ministers had faced a revolt within their party while they were on a foreign tour. "I am confident the history will not repeat", he claims.

Governor Kidar Nath Sahani, in the meanwhile, is also out of town and will be back sometimes when Parrikar returns. The chief minister however denies that it is a deliberate move, not to allow any rebellion activity in the tourist state.
