The United Goans Democratic Party has agreed to the concept
of one regional party, but not to merge itself into the Save
Goa Front.
The UGDP presidium, at its meeting held along with its sole
MLA Babush Monseratte, set up a six-member committee to decide
the modalities of a regional party.
Party's secretary general Anacleto Viegas, MLA Monseratte,
vice president Radharao Gracias, secretary Prashant Naik as
well as Shravan Dubhashi and Auda Viegas are its members.
The proposal of Monseratte and Gracias to merge UGDP into
Churchill Alemao's SGF was vehemently opposed by members,
sources later on told the media.
Viegas also did not elaborate upon the meaning of 'one regional
party without merger'. The committee will decide about it,
he said.
The committee, besides deciding the organisational structure
and the symbol, has also been told to meet all the regional
parties to ascertain their views.
The split within the regional forces has strengthened the
national parties like the Congress and the BJP, said Viegas.
I will abide by the party decision, Monseratte told the media
persons later.
