Churchill's Save Goa supports Govt

Sandesh Prabhudesai
14 June 2007

Churchill Alemao yesterday made a volte face by unconditionally supporting the Congress-led alliance government from outside.

He also did not oppose the Congress plan to make his colleague Alex Reginald Lawrenco the deputy speaker. "We will definitely think about it if the offer comes", he told reporters at a press conference held in Margao.

As a first step towards their support, the Save Goa Front has decided to back Pratapsing Rane's candidature for the speaker's post tomorrow.

According to Alemao, by supporting the Congress-led government, he wants to prove to the Goan public that he is not a tool in the hands of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar, as was projected by the section of media.

Though supporting the government from outside, Alemao clarified that he would definitely field his daughter as the Lok Sabha candidate from South Goa in the forthcoming by-election.

The seat has fallen vacant as Alemao himself resigned to contest the Assembly seat. He defeated seven-time MLA Luizinho Faleiro from Navelim.

He also clarified that he would go ahead with his seven-point agenda that includes scrapping Mopa airport and opposition to the SEZs.

Though he maintained that both he and Lawrenco are not independents and his SGF is a recognised party, Dr Wilfred Mesquita made a correction, stating that the process of applying for recognition would now begin as they have polled over six per cent votes.
