A canoe carrying tourists from Andhra Pradesh capsized today
evening near Anjuna, killing two persons while around five
to seven are still missing.
People from another canoe in the sea succeeded in rescuing
around 18 persons, including two locals.
Around 25 tourists had gone a Dolphin trip in the Arabian
Sea from Calangute beach, from among total 197 persons who
had come on Goa trip in six buses from Andhra Pradesh.
The small canoe, packed up with around 23 to 25 tourists,
capsized while it reached in a close vicinity of Anjuna beach.
"We are still in a process of searching the missing
persons", said DIG of Police Karnal Singh. No person
has been identified so far while the police are also not sure
how many tourists were in the canoe.
Among two more, who have been hospitalised, one tourist is
believed to be in a serious condition.
The incident has brought to the fore the blatant illegality
of the canoe owners of packing up tourists, without following
any kind of safety measure.
"We will definitely investigate into this angle",
said Singh. He was unable to state the exact cause of the
tragedy.
