Rane elected unopposed
as the Speaker

Congress MLA Pratapsing Rane was elected unopposed the speaker
of Goa.
BJP candidate Laxmikant Parsekar and independent MLA Anil
Salgaoncar withdrew their nominations before the session commenced.
Protem speaker Alexio Sequeira declared Rane elected unopposed.
Manohar Parrikar, the BJP leader, said they withdrew the
candidature as they had no enough number to win.
Churchill Alemao's two-member Save Goa Front had also declared
their support to Rane.
Rane was fielded by the Congress-led alliance, also consisting
of the three-member NCP, two-member MGP and independent Vishwajeet
Rane, taking their total to 22 in the 40-member House.
Earlier, Sequeira also administered oath to all the newly
elected legislators.
Rane, the former chief minister for five times since 1980,
was also the speaker in the ninth Assembly elected in 1999.
He is the seniormost legislator, elected continuously for
nine times since 1972.
