Pawar warns of stern
action
PTI, New Delhi
17 January 2008
With the political developments in Goa coming as a surprise,
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar tonight warned his party MLAs that
they would face "extreme action" if they go ahead
with moves to withdraw support to the Congress-led coalition
there.
Pawar told PTI that his enquiries with the state Governor
as also the Chief Minister revealed that they have not received
any communication from the three party MLAs.
Noting that the NCP was for stability of the Digambar Kamat
government, he said the legislators could air their grievances
to the party leadership.
Hoping that a way out could be found through dialogue and
discussions, he suggested that failure to heed to the party
could invite "extreme action".
In this regard, he recalled a decision of the Bombay High
Court which held that the refusal to listen to the party directive
amounted to anti-defection attracting disqualification from
the Assembly.
Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat earlier said
his government is safe and faced no threat and that NCP supremo
Pawar had assured him that his party MLAs in Goa will not
withdraw support.
Kamat told newsmen after an emergency Cabinet meeting that
he had spoken to the Union Agriculture minister hours after
the NCP, which has three MLAs, announced it will withdraw
its support tomorrow.
NCP is the second largest constituent in the Congress-led
coalition and its threat put a question mark on the fate of
the seven-month government throwing up a fresh political crisis
in the state.
