The Congress on Thursday exuded confidence that the Digambar
Kamat-led government in Goa would continue and said there
was no chance of the opposition BJP to come to power in the
state.
The crisis was temporarily averted by getting the Assembly
session prorogued by 2.30 pm, when it was to assemble to take
voting on the appropriation bill, a finance bill, which could
decide fate of the government.
"It is very clear that in Goa, our government will continue.
There is no chance of (Leader of Opposition in Goa assembly)
Manohar Parrikar becoming the Chief Minister," senior
Congress leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister
P R Dasmunsi told reporters in the Capital.
He, however, refused to comment further, saying senior NCP
leader and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had air-dashed
to Panaji to take stock of the political situation there.
Dasmunsi also replied in the negative when asked whether
the issue came up for discussion before the Union Cabinet.
Meanwhile, with his party MLAs in Goa remaining defiant,
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar signalled that he would crack the
whip as the party sent its central leaders to Panaji for averting
any crisis to the Congress-led coalition government.
"I am sending my senior colleagues to the state to take
stock of the situation. They will also be carrying a letter
to the Speaker informing him that the action by the MLAs amounts
to inviting anti-defection provisions," Pawar told reporters
here.
NCP leaders, Praful Patel and D P Tripathi, have been tasked
with the responsibility to defuse the crisis in the coastal
state.
The NCP supremo warned his party MLAs that they would face
extreme action. The Congress and the NCP fought election together
and they should honour the poll pact, he added.
In the letter to the Speaker, Pawar said he has referred
to a Bombay High Court ruling which held that the refusal
to listen to the party's directive amounted to anti-defection
attracting disqualification from the Assembly.
"According to the new law, these MLAs can be stopped
from contesting for the next five years," he said.
Hoping that party MLAs in Goa would think again before taking
any decision, he said the legislators could air their grievances
to the party leadership.
"If they do not heed to the party's directive, they
would face extreme action," he added.
