Mauvin Godinho, the Congress MLA from Cortalim, was elected
the deputy speaker today by voice vote.
Earlier, Alex Reginald Lawrenco, Save Goa Front MLA from
Curtorim, secured only 17 votes in the 40-member House in
a division vote.
Speaker Pratapsing Rane thus declared Godinho being elected
the deputy speaker and did not take the candidature of BJP
MLA Ramesh Tawadkar for voting.
All 14 BJP MLAs, including Tawadkar, stood in favour of Lawrenco.
The division vote was demanded by Manohar Parrikar, the state
opposition leader.
The 17 in opposition, besides the BJP, included two SGF legislators
and Babush Monseratte, the sole UGDP legislator.
