Vishwa Sammelan now outside Goa

PTI, Panaji
17 October 2007

Gomant Vishwa Sammelan (GVS), an annual gathering of Non Resident Goans (NRG), will not be held in Goa from this year onwards, NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro said today.

"We have decided to support NRG conventions abroad and around India, we may not hold it in Goa in future," Faleiro told mediapersons this afternoon.

He conceded that GVS in Goa, which is being held for last four years, failed to evoke desirable response forcing the state authorities to review the convention.

Around three lakh Goans have settled abroad mostly in Gulf countries.

"Last June, the Goan community in Portugal held their convention in Lisbon and next such convention is planned in Delhi by a NGO Goenkarancho Ekvott," faleiro said.

The NRI Commissioner stated that Goa government will sanction Rs one lakh for conventions in India and Rs three lakh abroad.

"Several NRG organisations across the world wish to hold conventions of the Goan community and seek our support. We will provide financial support only if they fulfill our conditions," Faleiro said.

"The annual convention should be held by rotation in different continents and in a country where there is a significant population of NRGS," he stated.

The NRI Commissioner said that the organisation should be recommended by Indian embassy or High Commission in respective country.
