VHP appeals Govt to build Ram temple

Sandesh Prabhudesai
18 October 2000

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has made a fervent appeal to the government to take initiative in constructing Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya while resolving not to take a step behind in accomplishing its mission under any circumstances.

Though the two-day meet of the central advisory board, which began at Ponda in Goa today, is planning to come out with the proposed action plan and the date of beginning the construction by tomorrow, around 150 dharmgurus who assembled here are unanimous on going ahead with the construction work.

"We have never left any mission half way till date", announced Acharya Dharmendra at a press conference today evening, though he refused to divulge any details of the ongoing discussion on the proposal.

"We are discussing all the pros and cons, based on which the action plan would be prepared after taking into consideration all the aspects of the issue", said Pravinkumar Togadia, the VHP general secretary.

Earlier at the inaugural session in the morning, VHP working president Ashok Singhal made an appeal to the government (not mentioning whether the state or the central government) to take initiative in this regard. "It is not difficult if there is political will", he said.

In a fiery and provocative speech, Singhal also announced amidst applause that Ram temple is a religious right of all the Hindus and no power can stop them from constructing it at the holy place where Lord Rama was born.

The meeting also passed three resolutions, demanding a legislation to ban religious conversions as well as to make protection of cow a fundamental right in the constitution while resolving to fight against construction of the Tehri dam as would it destroy the holy river of Ganga.

"The Churches of all the Christian faiths are united as a single entity on the issue of destroying Hinduism in India", said Togadia, stating that the VHP would take up a nation-wide campaign against the Christian aggression.

Alleging that the Baptist Church in the North-East region is sponsoring the secessionist and terrorist movements like the National Liberation Front of Tripura for an independent nation, the resolution stated that a comprehensive legislation on religious conversions would help in preventing such anti-national activities.

"It is a triangular attack the Hindus are facing from the communal extremists like the Christians as well as Muslims and communist extremism by the naxalites in several parts of India", said Dharmendra.

Stating in a separate resolution that the Tehri dam would stop the flow of Ganga river, the VHP meet stated that the Sant Sansad would never accept the self-destructive plans of the government while also resolving to give up their lives to save the holy river of Ganga.

In order to facilitate the central government to impose ban on cow slaughter and export of beef, the meet also demanded either to make protection of cow the fundamental right or include it in a concurrent list.

The meet also demanded that the export of beef be stopped immediately while also stopping the subsidy being rendered by the government to the slaughter houses. "It is disturbing the ecological as well as economic balance of the country", states the resolution.
