Babush arrested for
attacking police

Panaji police on Tuesday night arrested Taleigao MLA Babush
Monseratte, on a charge of attempt to murder, along with his
wife Jennifer, Panaji mayor Tony Rodrigues and his son, for
attacking the police station along with his supporters.
Furious with the morcha led by Babush attacking the lady
police and burning a vehicle in front of the town police station,
the police also attacked his Taleigao house and stoned his
five posh cars.
According to the police, total 21 police constables including
a lady constable were injured by the Babush supporters, who
marched at the police station in the evening, demanding arrest
of some people, who allegedly attacked one of their supporters.
Following sudden attack on the police station, the police
resorted to lathicharge and bursting of tear gas shells to
disperse the crowd.
While attacking Babush's bungalow, the police lifted his
son and brought to the police station. They later also arrested
Babush's wife Jennifer, when she came to the police station
to enquire.
This was followed by arrest of Babush himself, along with
Panaji mayor Tony, when they rushed to the police station,
to enquire about Jennifer's arrest.
It also started in the evening when Babush supporters marched
to the police station, demanding arrest of those who allegedly
beat up their supporter Rayon by brother of Babani Shaikh.
Prior to the morcha, Babush supporters closed down Taleigao
market and also partially closed down parts of Panaji market
during the morcha.
The police were taken by a surprise when Babush, along with
his supporters, started barging the police station under the
pretext of getting court arrested.
They suddenly started beating up the police personnel, including
the lady police constables. They also burnt down one motorcycle
parked in front of the police station, while damaging other
vehicles. This led to retaliation by the police.
Later, mayor Tony was admitted to the city hospital Vintage,
according to the police.
