Save Goa-UGDP to be merged into Cong?

Sandesh Prabhudesai
20 January 2008

In an yet another dramatic turn, PWD minister Churchill Alemao and Taleigao MLA Babush Monseratte yesterday rushed to Delhi with a proposal to merge both the Save Goa Front and the UGDP into the Congress.

If agreed upon by the high command, this would strengthen Congress to 19 and the Congress-NCP combine to 22, in the 40-member House.

The condition however is to keep two-member MGP out and not to drop Urban Development minister Joaquim Alemao to accommodate MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar in the cabinet.

Churchill and Babush are also accompanied by Save Goa MLA Alex Reginald Lawrenco and Joaquim.

Babush, before the crisis started last week, had offered to merge his UGDP legislature party into the NCP.

However, with the Congress-NCP move to leave him out of the ruling alliance by striking a deal with the MGP and independent minister Vishwajeet Rane, Babush has chanted sides to become a Congressman once again.

Disclosing this plan, sources close to the Alemao camp said the SGF-UGDP group would meet the Congress high command with the proposal today in Delhi.

The Congress-NCP had yesterday succeeded in blowing up the four-day long crisis by splitting the rebel group.

The agreement was to accommodate all three - Joseo Philip D'Souza and Micky Pacheco of the NCP and Vishwajeet - back into the cabinet, while inducting Sudin Dhavalikar of the MGP.

As a result, the high command has reportedly decided to drop Joaquim and not to strip off Churchill of his lucrative PWD portfolio.

Babush was totally upset with the deal since he had been left all alone while Alemao brothers were upset for losing one cabinet berth in the family.
