Goa's civic polls to go electronic

Sandesh Prabhudesai
20 June 2007

Following Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, Goa has now decided to conduct elections of self-governing bodies also through electronic voting machines.

The state is scheduled to go for elections of 13 municipalities and 50 zilla panchayats by 2009.

The decision in this regard was taken at a two-day national conference of state election commissioners at Nainital. N Gopalswami, the chief election commissioner, presided over the meeting.

According to Goa state election commissioner P M Borkar, the state would use 25 per cent of its own EVMs while the rest would be provided by the ECI.

Goa was the first state in the country to use EVMs in June 1999 Assembly polls.

Though recently concluded state Assembly elections also used the EVMs, the panchayats elections held a month earlier however were conducted by using old system of ballot papers.

Due to this, the counting of panchayats polls was going on till late night while Assembly results were out by 1.30 pm.

Goa would be the second state, after Rajasthan, to conduct all elections electronically.
