SGF merger on Wed

Sandesh Prabhudesai
21 January 2008

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today evening gave a nod to merge Churchill Alemao's Save Goa Front into the Congress.

"The merger will take place on Wednesday", said Alemao.

Meanwhile, urban development Joaquim Alemao (Congress) has also ruled out the possibility of him being dropped from the Digambar Kamat cabinet.

Both the brothers had rushed to the national capital two days ago since the high command had struck a deal with the MGP, who had split from the group of nine rebels.

In return, the high command had agreed to accommodate MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar into the cabinet, by dropping Joaquim.

This move was retaliated by Alemaos rushing to Delhi with Taleigao MLA Babush Monseratte, who has also offered to merge his one-member UGDP into the Congress.

"Our talks are still on and I am hopeful of positive results", Babush told from Delhi.

Churchill met Sonia today evening, after which he confirmed the move to merge his eighth-month old regional outfit, which was formed to defeat the Congress.

After quitting as the Congress MP, Churchill's SGF had defeated two Congress bigwigs - Francisco Sardinha (now the South Goa MP) and Luizinho Faleiro, besides posing serious challenge before few more Congressmen like Alexio Sequeira and Philip Neri Rodrigues.

The merger is the outcome of the revolt staged by three ministers - two NCP and independent minister Vishwajeet Rane - to topple the Digambar government for the second consecutive time within 222 days along with Babush and the BJP.

While the revolt was diffused, the Congress in the bargain got strengthened further with the SGF merger while the UGDP merger may also not be far from the reality.
