Somnath Zuwarkar, former Congress minister
and chairman of Goa State Co-operative Bank, as well as the
bank CEO C N Salkar were today remanded to police custody
for seven more days, in connection with the bank scam.
On the other hand, the high court rejected
Salkar's bail application while directing Zuwarkar to first
approach the district and sessions court. The lower court
had earlier rejected Salkar's plea. Zuwarkar's plea however
would be decided tomorrow.
The state police had arrested both of them
on 17 May, after which they were remanded to five-day police
custody. While they challenged the JMFC orders in higher courts,
the police succeeded in seeking further remand for them.
The fraud which they committed in the apex
bank of the state was brought to light by three directors
of the bank. Supporting the move, chief minister Manohar Parrikar
has now also requested the RBI to probe into the functioning
of the bank.
In addition, co-operation minister Prakash
Velip has also sought an assurance from the central registrar
of co-operative societies to investigate into the state of
affairs of the bank. The apex bank has been granted multi-state
status few years ago.
Meanwhile, former power minister Mauvin Godinho,
who was arrested by the state police in the multi-crore power
rebate scam, was released today morning as per the high court
order. He has now applied for anticipatory bail, fearing further
arrest in another case pending before the police.
Though Godinho was taking shelter in the
state hospital at night since 17 May, the police lifted him
at 3.30 am today and put him in the police lock-up. "We had
misinterpreted the court order in this regard earlier", said
a police official.
