Goa rain claims 1, 8 injured

Sandesh Prabhudesai
23 June 2007

Heavy rains and strong winds blowing since last night played havoc all over Goa, uprooting over 300 trees, damaging few houses, injuring many and killing one bus driver in Valpoi.

Power supply was disrupted in many places, especially in South Goa, including chief minister Digambar Kamat's Margao town.

A bus driver was killed on the spot in a bus accident at Redi Ghati in Valpoi while injuring five passengers. Another bus at Ponda Ghat slipped down in a valley but got stuck on a tree, saving all lives.

A family of three got injured at Kullnem Bhat in Curchorem when a tree fell on their house.

The famous Coco beach at Nerul in Bardez (across Mandovi river) got fully washed away with around 50 coconut trees getting uprooted.

Inter-state bus transport was disrupted due to uprooting of trees all over the highway, delaying buses by 8 to 10 hours.

Trains were also delayed by two hours as all are running at a slow speed.

Air transport was however running smooth, except slight delay of 20 to 30 minutes.

Over seven inches of rain has been registered in the last 24 hours since 5.30 yesterday evening. Goa has registered over 35 inches of rain since 1 June.

The meteorological department has predicted similar trend of heavy rainfall with strong winds in the next 24 hours.
