Goa collects one crore on Kar Vivad

Sandesh Prabhudesai
24 December 1998

Goa is expected to collect around Rs one crore through the Kar Vivad Samadhan Scheme by making settlement of around 40 cases by the year end.

Working out settlements on 31 applications received so far, the local central excise office has already got declarations to the tune of Rs 40 lakh. At least Rs 60 lakh more would come within a week, says Sarvajeet Rana, commissioner for the central excise and customs.

Though all the formalities could be finalised by 31 March, Rana plans to complete the whole procedure by 20 February while deciding about the cases within 10 days of the expiry date of 31 December.

Though around 500 show cause notices have been sent by the department till date to several defaulters, Rana appears to be satisfied with the response received in a small state like Goa. It included around six computer units, Vishwsharaiya Steels, a PSU as well as industries like Fil Corp, Toyo Laboratories, Chemitex, Geno Pharmaceuticals, Pepsi's Goa Bottling Ltd etc.

Goa annually collects around Rs 300 crore through custom duties and Rs 400 crore through excise duties.
