Sandesh Prabhudesai
24 May 2001

A naval fighter air craft crashed in South Goa today afternoon, during a routine sortie.

The pilot, Lt. Vikram Menon, however has jumped out safely.

According to official naval PRO, the air craft belonging to INS Hansa crashed at around 12 noon today, on a hillock in Canacona taluka.

The Canacona police immediately intimated the naval authorities in Vasco. The naval officials as well as police rushed to the spot immediately.

According to Canacona police, some mechanical fault occurred in the craft and the pilot lost communication with the centre.

As he saw water of Chapoli dam, he immediately jumped out with the help of a parachute. Two village boys fishing near the dam rescued him and brought Lt Menon safely to the police station.

It was raining heavily while strong wind was blowing when the mechanical fault occurred, according to Canacona police.
