South Goa by-polls on 30 Oct

Sandesh Prabhudesai
25 September 2007

The by-election for the South Goa seat would be held on 30 October.

The votes would be counted on 3 November, as per the press note released by the Election Commission of India today.

The seat had fallen vacant as PWD minister Churchill Alemao had resigned as the MP on 8 May, while quitting the Congress, to contest the state Assembly polls.

Heading the Save Goa Front, a regional outfit, he won two seats, defeating two Congress bigwigs - Francisco Sardinha and Luizinho Faleiro.

Both Sardinha and Faleiro are presently trying for the Lok Sabha ticket.

On the other hand, Churchill is trying hard to field his Delhi-based lawyer daughter Valanka, if possible, on the Congress ticket.

After joining the Congress-led coalition government recently as his BJP-led attempt to topple the Digambar Kamat government had failed, Churchill is trying to merge the SGF into the Congress, in return of the South Goa ticket for his daughter.

Union minister for Information and Broadcasting Priyaranjan Dasmunshi was recently in Goa in this connection.

As per the schedule declared by the ECI, the notification of the by-polls would be issued on 5 October. With nominations beginning on 12 October, the last date for withdrawals would be 15 October.

Along with South Goa, the ECI has also declared by-election in Lanji Assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh as the seat had fallen vacant due to death of Dileep Bhaiyalal.
