In an overnight development, Digambar Kamat government has
reduced to minority with the two-member Maharashtrawadi Gomantak
Party withdrawing its support and Victoria Fernandes resigning
as the Congress MLA.
Manohar Parrikar, the opposition leader of the BJP, has staked
his claim to form the alternate government with the support
of two-member MGP, two-member Save Goa Front, one-member United
Goans Democratic Party and independent Anil Salgaoncar, besides
its own 14..
It appears that Parrikar is set to form an alternate government
along with Churchill Alemao, Babush Monseratte and Sudin Dhawalikar.
While Parrikar is rushing to the Raj Bhavan in the morning
to stake his claim, Kamat claims that he can prove his majority
on the floor of the House in the afternoon. The monsoon session
is on.
Both are claiming of having 20 MLAs each with them, in the
40-member House.
Health minister Vishwajeet Rane, another independent and
son of speaker Pratapsing Rane, has still not clarified his
position. Both Kamat and Parrikar claim that Vishwajeet is
with him.
Kamat however admits that PWD minister Sudin Dhawalikar has
withdrawn support of two-member MGP, along with his brother
Dipak.
He also dismissed the possibility of recommending dissolution
of the Assembly, claiming that he still enjoys majority.
However, it is a fact that Kamat has reduced to 19 as the
Congress is now left with only 15 MLAs, out of which Rane
sits in the speaker's chair, reducing it further to 14. In
addition, he is still supported by three-member Nationalist
Congress Party.
In spite of having Vishwajeet with Kamat, he cannot go beyond
18 on the floor while Parrikar is now having 20 members in
his support.
It includes, besides 14 of the BJP, two-member each of the
MGP and SGF, one-member UGDP and one independent.
