Assembly adjourned without voting

Sandesh Prabhudesai
26 July 2007

The ruling Congress-led alliance managed to get a temporary respite by raising pandemonium in the House and getting the proceedings adjourned till Monday without voting, to save itself from the threat of collapse.

Goa Democratic Alliance, the BJP-led combination, has however termed it as a moral defeat of the Digambar Kamat government, while continuing to claim that they enjoy the majority in the now-turned 39-member House.

Chief minister Kamat however still claims that he enjoys the majority in spite of two-member MGP and independent MLA Anil Salgaoncar withdrawing support to the 49-day old government.

Speaker Pratapsing Rane has also not accepted resignation of Congress MLA Victoria Fernandes, who has also signed the letter the GDA has submitted to Governor S C Jamir.

The political drama will not shift from the Assembly to the Raj Bhavan as Jamir is expected to arrive here tomorrow from Delhi.

Hectic parleying meanwhile continued from the chief minister's residence to mobilize majority number on its side.

The Kamat government has reduced to minority with the MGP and one independent withdrawing their support to the 23-member strong government in the 40-member House.

Sources in the Congress are reportedly trying hard to persuade Save Goa Front leader Churchill Alemao, who has been offered deputy chief minister's post by Manohar Parrikar - tipped to be the new chief minister.

Though the letter of GDA to the governor claims that two Congress MLAs have resigned, they have not been able to manage second Congressman to resign.

Urban development minister Joaquim Alemao, the younger brother of Churchill, was to resign as claimed by the BJP camp earlier.

The GDA has also failed in getting health minister Vishwajeet Rane, an independent MLA and son of speaker Rane, on their side in spite of their previous claim.

Both Kamat and Parrikar are presently claiming to have 20 members on their side.

The decision of the governor, in this situation, becomes crucial.
