Tourists to be diverted to hinterland

Goa will focus on hinterland
tourism to clear off rush on the beaches during the tourist season, a senior official
today said.
"We have been getting whopping response from tourists.
Taking advantage of this, we are also showcasing our rich hinterland so that usual
rush on the beaches is lessened," state Tourism Secretary M Modassir told
PTI.
He said the state will touch 25 lakh tourist mark this year.
The
rush will be in addition to the existing global markets explored by Goa, Modassir
said.
"We are also targeting American tourists," Modassir said
pointing to the visit of Goa contingent to America for 'Incredible India @ 60'
event.
The state with 105-km-long beaches is known as a beach destination
with four lakh foreign tourists visiting the place.
"We have rich hinterlands
which can be of interest for tourists, especially foreigners. We had good response
even during monsoons," the tourism secretary said.
On competition from
other destinations like Kerala, Modassir said Goa has no competition from anyone.
"Kerala is not our competitor but we can learn from each other. They (Kerala)
can even come to us and learn positive things which Goa tourism has," he
added.
