Lata sings, Advani cries

Sandesh Prabhudesai
30 December 2000

She sang 'Aei Mere Watan Ke Logon..' and cried Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Now, it was the turn of union home minister Lal Krishna Advani...

The seven-feet tall iron man was in tears when Lata started 'Jyoti Kalash Chalke...', the favourite song of Advani.

While speaking after felicitating India's nightingale Lata Mangeshkar with Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar, Advani remembered how he and prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had gone for a movie 'Phir Subah Hogi' after losing one municipal election many years ago.

"I don't remember anything of that movie, except Sudhir Fadke's song 'Jyoti Kalash', sung by Lataji in that movie", he mentioned. He also wondered, at another stage while speaking, why Lataji would not sing at the function.

After replying to the felicitation, it was a sheer surprise for the audience and Advani himself when Lata started 'Jyoti Kalash Chalke..'

The home minister of India was full of tears and deep emotional expressions on his face. Thrice he turned towards her to say thank you, but could not. He then simply allowed his tears flow down his cheeks....
