IIT NRIs to meet in Goa

Sandesh Prabhudesai
31 January 2003

Targeting US-based IITian NRIs' investment, Goa's IIT-turned chief minister Manohar Parrikar is planning a follow-up meet by December end here, as a fallout of his recent US tour.

Returning from the 10-day US visit to attend 50 years celebration of IIT in India organised by the US-based IITians there, Parrikar appears confident of major NRI investment from his college mates, who are in high positions in various fields.

"There is no specific commitment, but many friends of mine have expressed desire to invest in Goa", he said. He thus immediately plans to activate the NRI cell here, to start preparing for the meet.

According to him, his predecessors have always neglected the NRIs based in the USA and Europe, who have more potential to invest and help Goa to prosper, rather than those working in the Gulf countries. Even the Goan NRIs in America are contacted, with a similar request, he informs.

Though nothing concrete emerged out of his US tour in terms of investment, Parrikar points out at the willingness expressed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation to help the proposed international air port at Mopa.

"We have to now decide what kind of help we want to seek", he says, informing further that they have agreed to help at every stage - preparing feasibility report, project report, financial report and even actual contracting out the project.

Goa has also signed an MoU with the Concordia University in Montreal for the master's degree in aviation and air port management, following similar MoUs with Delhi, Chennai and the All India Council for Technical Education.
