Rane, Malaviya painted black

Sandesh Prabhudesai
31 March 2003

Mr Shantaram Rane, Member Secretary of Kala Academy, was painted black by over 100 furious activists of the Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch today by storming the Kala Academy complex today afternoon.

Later, the protesters including young boys and girls also stormed office of the Goa Meat Complex, painting black H. K. Malaviya, who has been appointed as the managing director of the Goa Meat Complex on contract by gifting him third extension after retirement.

At Kala Academy, the GHM protesters also burnt down effigy of chairman Mr Pratapsing Rane, amidst shouting slogans in protest of appointing two non-locals as music teachers without even advertising for the posts locally.

After submitting memorandums to the GKA officials as well as Chief Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar last month demanding immediate scrapping of the blatantly illegal contractual appointments, the GHM at a rally held in Panaji had served a deadline. The action was in response to the inaction of the authorities.

Addressing the activists and artists gathered at the venue, Mr Prashant Naik, the GHM spokesperson, warned that the youth of Goa would not allow any programme organised by Kala Academy if the deserving artists of Goa are continued to be neglected and insulted in such a manner by appointing non-locals for no reason.

While cautioning the government not to play with the sentiments of the Goan unemployed youth, Mr Naik also declared that all such officers and politicians working against the interest of Goa and Goans would be treated as Criminals Against Goans in future and treated accordingly.

The activists later also marched to the nearby Goa Meat Complex office situated at Campal, shouting slogans against contractual appointment of Mr Malaviya, by granting him post-retirement extension for the third time at the cost of deserving Goan officers in the Animal Husbandry department. The memorandum in this regard was submitted to Animal Husbandry Minister Mr. Dayanand Mandrekar last week.
