Dayanand Narvekar, former deputy chief minister and president
of the Goa Cricket Association, was finally arrested by the
state police today.
Karnal Singh, the DIG of Police, informed that the petition,
challenging the conditional anticipatory bail granted to him
by the high court last month, was disposed of by the apex
court.
In its order, the supreme court stated that the order of
the high court has worked out itself as one month for the
anticipatory bail was already over. In view of this, the court
refused to go into the merit of the case.
The state police wanted to arrest Narvekar in connection
with a bogus ticket scam of the final cricket ODI held between
Australia and India on 6 April. He has been accused
as the key person behind the whole racket worth Rs one crore.
However, he had succeeded in seeking anticipatory bail from
the local bench of the Bombay high court on 26 April,
for the period of one month while also restraining him to
function as the GCA president.
Though police had challenged the HC order in the apex court
immediately, the matter came up for final hearing today, when
the period of month had already lapsed. The apex court thus
declined to go into the merits of the case.
"We have now arrested him as we wanted him for custodial
interrogation and there is no binding of the court order any
more", stated Singh.
The police had earlier arrested Rama Shankardas, the GCA
treasurer and Narvekar's close accomplice, ticket contractor
Chinmay Fallari as well as three others.
Narvekar had tried his best to avoid the police custody,
even by getting himself admitted into the hospital after the
sessions court had rejected his anticipatory bail application.
The lower court had however granted him relief to approach
the high court.
