Tourists from all over India and abroad flock
down to Goa to enjoy the cheap liquor and dance at the tunes
of western English songs at the beat shows and special Carnival
nights. But Remo, the Goan English pop singer of international
repute, is running away from the pomp and glory of the cities.
After coming out with a spiritual album ‘Beyond
India’ two months ago, the creative pop singer and musician
of Goa is on a ‘folk trip’. He spent two days last month at
the unique seventh Goa Yuva Mahotsav, organised by the youth
of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, in the interiors of Sattari taluka,
in the deep north.
He was quite impressed with folk performances
of the college-going village youth as well as special programmes
of traditional instruments. While intermingling with these
young village artists, Remo even played his flute with the
help of ‘ghumat’ and ‘dholl’ – the traditional instruments
of Goan villages.
Taking a step ahead, he is now performing
this week at the historic First All India Konkani Music Festival,
keeping his whole band away from the stage and singing at
the beats of traditional percussion instruments. "It
will be a unique show in my life", says Remo, who is
mesmerised with the traditional folk music.
If you know Remo, then it is a good sign
that something much more unique is in the making. What’s that
unique stuff, well, one has to wait impatiently till he comes
out with a new album.
