3 more jail guards suspended for beating up 50 prisoners

Three more jail guards from Colvale central jail were suspended today, for violating human rights by mercilessly beating up 50 prisoners almost a month ago.

The order, suspending Narayan Naik, Pramod Mayekar and Bablo Varak, was issued today.

“They were not on duty but are seen in action in the video footage of CCTV cameras”, Elvis Gomes, IG Prison, told goanews.com.

With this, the number of suspensions rose to eight, including jail superintendent Melwyn Vaz and jailor Krishna Usgaonkar.

“Our departmental inquiry is still going on. The proposed suspension of these jail guards was withheld to ascertain the extent of their involvement”, said Gomes.

The ongoing inquiry, he said, has corroborated with the statements of prisoners recorded.

The brutal incident had come to light when some of the injured prisoners were produced before NDPS court judge Desmond D’Costa for a remand on 12 October.

He immediately moved into action by reporting the horrific incident to the Goa Human Rights Commission, which is also inquiring into it.

The incident occurred on 10 October, when prisoners from Sada sub-jail and Mapusa judicial custody were transferred to the Colvale central jail.

With the media expose, the government has also now instituted a judicial inquiry by South Goa Collector Dr Sachin Shinde.

He is still probing into the matter though he was actually supposed to submit the report by month end.
