Pundalik Naik Natya Mahotsav from today

Goa will celebrate one of its most versatile and popular drama writer Pundalik Naik by holding performances of his award winning plays at five different places simultenously, beginning from today.

State Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will inaugurate this event, titled as `Pundalik Naik Natya Mahotsav,’ at Shiroda village, which is jointly organized by state art and culture department and Cricketer Shubham Naik Trust.

Goa’s award winning drama troupes will present five of best dramas penned by Naik starting from April 12 to April 16 in the places like Shiroda, Sanguem, Sattari, Canacona and Pernem.

“This is happening for the first time in Goa that festival devoted to a single drama writer is being held all across the state,” Shridhar Kamat Bambolkar, Chairman, Natya Mahotsav Organising committee, told PTI.

He said that `Konkani theatre during last four decades is very much indebted to Pundalik Naik for its tremendous growth.’

Purnanand Chari, Vice Chairman of organizing committee, said that Naik’s contribution for enrichment of Konkani literature is recognized by all, but as far as drama is concerned it is he who set the trend of its enormous growth.

Naik has penned 32 dramas during his entire career including international award winning `Sri Vichitrachi Jatra,’ which had won Pater’s Australian Award of Australian Academy of Broadcasting, Arts and Science.

Furthermore, Naik’s one act play `Chaurang’ won Sahitya Academy Award in 1984. “The theses on Naik’s comparison with Canadian writer James Reaney and Marathi playwriter Vijay Tendulkar are being worked by students,” Chari said. PTI RPS
