Indo-French combine to sharpen anti-submarine operations

Indian Navy will hone its skills to fight against the submarines during its scheduled naval exercises with French Navy, off Goa coast, beginning from April 17.

The French Destroyer FNS Montcalm has already arrived in India, currently docked at Goa’s Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), before initiating exercises with the Indian Navy.

“The 30 hour long exercises would begin on April 17 morning,” Commander Guillaume Fontarensky, commanding the anti submarine destroyer told reporters in Goa today.

He said that this exercise is a part of larger naval drill annually held between French and Indian Navy. “In between the two Varuna, such kind of smaller exercises are held to increase the understanding between two navies,” said Fontarensky.

The exercise scheduled off goa coast next week would hone the skills of Indian Navy in anti submarine and anti piracy operations, he said, adding that the common procedure would be developed by both the Navies to fight against submarines of hostile nations.

The Commander said that the details about participation from Indian counterpart would be known only after the session on Monday.

Francois Richier, France Ambassador in India, told reporters that such an exchange is crucial because the threat can come from anywhere, even from under the Sea. “This is very important for ensuring safety of the Indian Ocean,” he added.

Richier said that the threat of piracy in Indian Ocean is quiet controlled because of the pressure from various navies. “The number of attacks by pirates has decreased off late, compared to the past,” the Ambassador added.
