Access equality can make impossible possible: Mashelkar

Access equality is the key to success and it can be achieved through education, innovation and creativity, said Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, at a grand function held today to honour him with Goa’s most prestigious civilian award – Gomant Vibhushan.

Dr Mashelkar was quite free and frank today at the one-and-a-half hours of interview conducted by Dr Ajay Vaidya.

During the conversation, the scientist and researcher of Goan origin countered the theory that two parallels cannot meet.

“It’s possible with a convex lens”, he felt and said even inequality in Indian society can be reduced with the help of education and technological innovations.

He cited his own example, stating that he could complete his college education with the scholarship of Tata Foundation and then rose to different heights in his life.

However, he recalled one of the prestigious international awards bestowed upon industrialist Ratan Tata and him, one year after another.

“I grew up in my life with the scholarship from Tata and then we could stand together for one award. Education did it”, he said.

While stating that it looks impossible to eradicate illiteracy of India in next two decades, he said a computer programme has been invented that can make an illiterate a literate within eight weeks.

Dr Mashelkar however made it clear that India cannot be super power by 2020, though Dr A P J Abdul Kalam had set it as a target.

“But we can accelerate it with determination and planned governance with the help of education and technology”, he said.

Though China is today much ahead than India, Dr Mashelkar felt that the ultimate winner in the long run would be India, simply because it is a democratic country and China is not.

“Innovation and creativity is the key to success and it can be gained only through free mind to think. It’s possible only in a democratic set up like India”, said the optimist scientist.

In fact he appealed to the children with a very simple message – Enjoy what you do and Do what you enjoy!

He also appealed to the parents not to force their children into any educational stream or profession against their wish.

“There are ample opportunities available in India  today and lots of scope to develop each and every child unlike in the past”, observed Dr Mashelkar.

While speaking about his energy and multitasking skills, he said all of us have these multifunctional skills but we are not using it to the optimum.

Dr Mashelkar was handed over the prestigious Gomant Vibhushan Award at the hands of Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo, in the presence of chief minister Manohar Parrikar and opposition leader Pratapsing Rane.
