Fishing ban relaxed for motorised boats

Goa government has relaxed fishing ban for motorized boats, provided they use only gill nets for fishing.

The cabinet today decided to meet the demand of motorized boat owners, around 500, to allow them fishing during the ban period.

From this year, Goa has extended its fishing ban up to 31 July, almost for 61 days.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar said the boat owners however would be deprived of all the financial benefits during the ban period.

The ban for mechanized trawlers however would continue till 31 July.

The motorized boats however would not be allowed to use pursing nets for fishing.

Any such boat found would be impounded, said the chief minister.

He also said that the patrolling would be strengthened with the help of the Coast Guard.

He has also proposed to strengthen the coastal security with bigger boats and more personnel.

The motorized boats are expected to go for fishing from July, after the ongoing monsoon recedes.
