Death toll of building collapse may rise to 20: CM

The death toll is bound to increase further in the tragic collapse of a building under construction in Canacona as hardly any sign of life is seen inside the debris where the workers are trapped.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who was personally monitoring the rescue operations at Chaudi site in Canacona, told goanews.com that the death toll may rise to 20.

The fire brigade personnel and around 200 military men have already rescued around 21 workers trapped inside while nine dead bodies have been found so far.

The rescue operations are becoming complicated since four floors of the building have fallen above each other, like a pack of cards.

Secondly, the personnel are entering inside with caution so that no injured person is harmed but could be pulled out as safely as possible.

“They have even managed to save one life due to cautious rescue operation”, said Parrikar.

According to the chief minister, the rest of the workers are deeply trapped inside and it was very difficult to find a person alive in such a situation.

However, said Parrikar, the inquiries have revealed that little over 50 workers were trapped and not 70 or 80 as reported by section of the media.

“The only silver lining in this whole horrifying tragedy is that our personnel could save maximum lives possible with quick action and caution”, said the chief minister.
