John claims he had asked to relieve him

John Fernandes, the outgoing president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, confirmed the news of his replacement with Luizinho Faleiro, stating that “the decision is not a surprise to me.”

Fernandes, who was appointed as the GPCC chief on 18 December last year replacing Subhash Shirodkar, has been now replacement with Faleiro, the AICC general secretary and former Goa chief minister.

“I had requested the high command to relieve me, taking moral responsibility of the debacle in Lok Sabha election”, Fernandes told goanews.com.

Though Congress had increased its voting percentage from 31 to 36 per cent in Lok Sabha poll, the party had lost both the seats this time against the ruling BJP.

“But AICC in-charge of Goa Digvijay Singh had told me to hold on, stating that the Congress had done worst in the country,” said Fernandes.

He also claimed that he had done the best possible way to rebuild the party and keep the corrupt elements out of the Congress.

Fernandes now plans to hold a press conference tomorrow and explain the full position, thus did not elaborate.
