Mashelkar promotes hasslefree.com for India

"If there is one dot.com India needs today to become knowledge superpower in the 21st century, then it is the hassle-free.com where even minds of children would flow freely, providing full space for knowledge, innovation and creativity", says Dr Raghunath A Mashelkar.

It was a great moment to hear the son-of-the-soil every Goan should be proud of at a jam-packed Kala Academy auditorium here where Dr Mashelkar, director general of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, spoke extensively on "21st century as India's Century : Vision and Strategies".

Why can't our young boys and girls perform in the Indus valley when they excel in the Silicon valley, he asked, pointing out at all sorts of hassles including bureaucratic and political ones as well as conservative approach towards education as the prime cause of it.

Providing statistical database of education proforma of India, the CSIR chief observed that hardly 10 per cent Indians finally get higher education, which means that 90 per cent Indians are deprived of it.

Stating that child education needs to be on the top of the country's agenda, Dr Mashelkar stressed more upon making elementary education compulsory in the country and emphasising equally upon quality education as well as public-private partnership in the educational field.

"Nations become great where children are allowed to let their mind flow, ask questions and provided with all the information they want", he said, while recalling the dedicated and committed teachers he had even in the Union School of Mumbai where he studied.

While addressing the large gathering, half of which were students, Dr Mashelkar also stressed upon developing innovativeness among the youngs. "Innovator is the one who sees what everyone sees but thinks that nobody thinks", he quipped.

Stating confidently that 21st century would be India's century, the scientist who made India proud of its traditional knowledge of herbal medicines by winning a patent case of turmeric against the USA said amidst applause: "at the most they can put economic sanctions on us, but they cannot put sanctions on our mind".

Dr Mashelkar also listed out various other areas of self-development including self-confidence and self-pride, spirit of team work, positivism and rapid economic growth for the country to be the global leader.

"We have tremendous potential to build India as the knowledge-based economy. This would be the century of mind, which should be the century of India", he said while the whole gathering gave him a standing ovation at the end of his inspiring talk.
