CCP: Babush:BJP to work as 60:40; Furtado, Lata elected unopposed

Surendra Furtado was elected the Mayor of Corporation of City of Panaji today for the second time with Lata Parekh as the deputy mayor for the first time.

Both were elected unopposed as the corporators belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party did not field its candidates.

“In response to this positive gesture from the BJP, we have decided to give 40% representation to them on all the committees”, St Cruz MLA Babush Monseratte told goanews.com.

Babush panel won 17 seats in the recently held CCP election while the BJP panel got 13 seats.

The St Cruz MLA also said Furtado would remain the Mayor for the full term of five years while the deputy would be in rotation, changing every year.

“Let the corporators sit together and decide who should be the next deputy after one year”, said Babush.

Furtado, who had lost Assembly election of Panaji against BJP MLA Siddharth Kuncalienker, has been elected the corporator for the sixth time.

He was also the Mayor for two years since 2013 in the last term, after which Shubham Chodankar of the BJP had taken over from him.

Lata replaced her husband Yatin Parekh, who had been the Mayor in the past.

“I have already met Siddharth in the Assembly today and we have decided to work together for the development of Panaji”, Babush told goanews.com.

Accordingly, Furtado and Parekh would tomorrow call upon Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza as well as MLA Kuncalienker.

“Our first priority would be garbage disposal”, said Babush.
