Mhadei: Battle is won, war is still ahead: CM

“We have won one battle, now we have to win the final war.”

This is the way Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar described the victory over Mhadei river diversion dispute before the tribunal.

The Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal today passed an order on the interim application Karnataka had filed to divert only 7.6 TMC water to river Malprabha by illegally building Kalsa-Bandura canals.

The tribunal was set up on 16th November 2010 while Karnataka had filed interim application on 1st December 2015 for the immediate diversion of ‘little’ water for drinking purpose to Dharwad and Belgavi districts.

“Our former AG Atmaram Nadkarni studied the issue threadbare and won the first battle. I congratulate all those who worked hard for this first victory”, said Parsekar.

Opposition leader Pratapsing Rane also welcomed the verdict and advised Karnataka now to apply their mind on how to use waters of Malprabha and other rivers to meet their demands.

Rajendra Kerkar, who had initiated the issue in 2006, said North Karnataka has 22% surplus water and surplus is available even in Belgavi district.

The Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan secretary however cautioned Goans not to get overjoyed but remain alert on the issue.

“The ultimate plan of Karnataka is to block Mhadei water in Karnataka region and build over one dozen dams”, he said.

When one does not comprehend the legal implications of the dispute, it is typical for the ignoramus to celebrate and felicitate. There is Nothing WON here. The Order is just an interim relief, same as to maintain Status Quo. It is Judicial norm not to allow changes to take place until final decision.

It is also very true that Nadkarni is doing nothing for the love of Goa, but for the love of money which sum as fees can only come from the treasury.

Real hero is Rajendra Kerkar who tirelessly pursued this matter for may years. But they will award him or felicitate him because he is an unsung hero with no political connections, etc. Such a shame!

Aires Rodrigues,

Will you please settle your dispute with Atmaram Nadkarni amicably by asking prime minister Modiji to intervene in your matter and spare us from all the nonsense and gibberish you dish out against Nadkarnin and people you hate. Jai Ribandar.

Atmaram Nadkarni is a very good advocate and as our CM said all Goans congratulate him on his legal win. Aires is very jealous of Atmaram's intelligence, legal skills and success

The Mhadei water dispute is far from over and it could drag on for decades. This battle which infact involves the three neighbouring states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa must in public interest be resolved amicably. The three neighbours should see reason to seek the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reach to an amicable and peaceful settlement.

The cash strapped Goa has already spent crores by way of legal fees paid to Atmaram Nadkarni and his bandwagon of advocates. Atmaram Nadkarni is on record claiming that he is appearing in the matter because of his love for Goa. If that be so the former Advocate General of Goa should have volunteered his services gratis instead of over exorbitantly billing the State.

This water dispute needs to be brought to an agreeable close because it’s dragging on is something Goa desperately cannot afford. The government may then have the audacity to justify that it has to bring in more Casinos to sustain the mounting Mhadei legal fees.

It was professionally very improper on the part of Atmaram Nadkarni to mislead Goans by wrongly stating that Karnataka had yesterday come to the Madhei Water Disputes Water Tribunal in full force along with a musical band to celebrate. This is factually incorrect and a blatant lie by Atmaram Nadkarni who at least now as Additional Solicitor General of India should stop acting so deviously.

In public interest let not more crores be poured down the drain on this water dispute between neighbours. It is a criminal and unjustifiable waste of public funds which only works to the benefit of the Advocates making hay while milking and drying the State coffers. And Goa’s coffers are already in dire straits.
